Taijiquan is a simple exercise that is beneficial to human health. It was the product of human struggle with the hostile environment that surrounds the humans. Originated in China hundreds of years ago, today it is learned and practiced by people all over the world. Unlike any modern sport, Taijiquan is practiced for health with a rich curriculum that includes physical, mental and martial contents. This special feature makes it a unique system of exercise for people of all ages in today's busy world.
Taijiquan is made up of a series of movements that are martial arts in nature. By appearance, it looks like a dance, rather than a martial art. The movements are unique, sometime complex, but graceful and elegant. The practice of Taijiquan brings enjoyment to the physical body as well to the heart. Like a good cup of tea, or a beautiful painting, or an interesting chess game (as in the case of push-hands).
Taijiquan is unique in many ways including the following:
- The movements are natural in the sense that they are natural to human nature, not to present-day human behaviour. This means that to the average person who has already been heavily influenced by society and many other factors, Taijiquan movements are extremely difficult to learn. We view the idea that "Taijiquan is just naturally move anyway one you wish to" with open skepticism. Thus, we say, the practice of Taijiquan will "return" one to the "natural way of body movements". This implies that we believe the body "does not move naturally."
- The rhythm or timing of movements in Taijiquan different from any known human activity. There is something very unique about the seemingly slow and flowing motions of Taijiquan.
- The structure of Taijiquan movements are distinctively different from any known activity.
- The breathing method is unlike that of any normal activity or sport activity.
- The mind-intent is different than any leisure activity or academic activity.
In all, we believe that the ancients must have created something magnificent with the invention of taijiquan. It is to our benefit to learn it, practice it and do more research on it.
